The Saucony Peregrine 7 is the first trail shoe other than New Balance I have tested the past few years. So what made me change? Well I don’t run so much anymore with the amount of coaching work i have to deal with. So it was more out of curiosity than anything else.

We have unlimited trails here, such as gravel roads and single trail to run. So its an ideal surrounding to trial some new shoes.

The Saucony Peregrine 7 is the 3rd consecutive iteration. I had heard from many people, that the Peregrine 5  had a very stiff sole, and had no real feeling during the toe off phase of the stride. The Peregrine 6 solved this problem a bit better, but it took some time to break in.

The Upper

The Saucony Peregrine 7, kept much of the design from the past series 6 model. The biggest change was the upper of the shoe. Using their TPU Exoskeleton for enhanced support and protection. Which meant moving away from the FlexFilm overlays used in many of their road running shoes.

The fit of the upper felt roomy, they provided quite a lot of volume in the forefoot. This meant they were slightly wider than the Peregrine 6 model. Coming from New balance models i have ran in for many years, it was quite a big change.

I found that i needed to try slightly smaller sizes to compensate the added volume.

I was a bit nervous, as i dont have a wide foot especially for my part of the world, That it would affect the performance in technical terrain. But the TPU exoskeleton locked my midfoot pretty well and helped provide some stability and support from movement because of the added volume.

Toe Box

The toe bumper is designed as an extension of the TPU exoskeleton, which wraps around the entire forefoot. I found it to be flexible, and light while offering a small amount of stub protection.

Heel
The heel counter has be slightly redesigned. Plastic gives the heel counter a more sturdy feel while still allowing some flexibility. I found it provided good support and protection. During some of the longer 1hr trail runs, I found no rubbing or uncomfort of both my heel and Achilles tendon.

The heel counter is more sturdy where there is black plastic, but is overall semi flexible and has good support/protection.

Midsole

The Saucony Peregrine 7 keeps essentially the same EVA midsole as previous models but updated with full length Everun Topsole. Saucony claims that this will increase energy return. But to be honest i didn’t find this applicable or even noticeable from other shoes i have used over the past 15 years. The cushioning on the other hand is firm, yet enough for longer runs of up to 1.5hrs for the average person and for more elite runners it suits whom need less cushioning, but wanting a responsive feeling.

Outsole

This is where the Peregrine shines. The outsole has a very aggressive lugged design and the EBO rockplate is carried on from past models. The outersole really shined on loose technical trail once the sole broke in after 20km of running. The rubber compound provided an average grip on wet and dry rock. While after 200km of running i can say the durability is on average with most other brands, as i saw minimal wear.

Overall

Overall the Peregrine is a light and semi flexible Trail shoe. It is designed for most types of terrain and any speed. The shoe in my opinion shines in rough trails and loose surfaces. It lacks slightly in snow and mud, but the outsole is pretty versatile.

They provide a good response and feeling when running. But note they do take some time to break in. Out of the box they are slightly too stiff but with time and mileage they feel better and better

The Peregrine 7 is a good shoe for anyone looking for a all mountain racer/trainer, or anybody looking for a high quality, lightweight, versatile trail running shoe for just about any terrain except snow or very muddy/wet terrain.

A big thanks go to Swesports for allowing me to review the shoe. You can find this model on their website here – Saucony peregrine 7 trail running shoe
